The win puts the Oaks in sole possession of first place in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools. The Oaks are now 18-3 on the season.

Once again, Collegiate came roaring back from a late deficit, overcoming a nine-point Walsingham lead in the last 1:31 of regulation.

DSC_7050_DxO
The boys basketball team won three of four games, just missing capturing the championship of the Bishop Sullivan Holiday Tournament when they could not hold an 11-poiont, second half lead over Williamsburg Christian.

Bash Townes led the Oaks with 22 points against Williamsburg while Adam Grant and Kyonze Chavis were also in double figures.

Earlier in the tournament, Collegiate defeated Life Christian 70-63.

In another key holiday game, the Oaks downed highly-rated Virginia Academy with junior Ejike Obinna, a 6-9 power forward who is being recruited by most major basketball programs including the University of Virginia, Miami, Temple, Seton Hall, and others. But Townes outplayed Obinna, outscoring him 23-17 as Collegiate triumphed 70-60.

The team is back on the hardwood at home Tuesday against Nandua in a 7 p.m. start. The girls start the fun with a 5:30 p.m tipoff.

DSC_6698Adam Grant scored 20 points and Bash Townes added 15 and a dozen boards as the Oaks raced past Life Christian Academy, 69-33, Tuesday in their home opener.

The Oaks are 5-1 on the season. They play at 3 p.m. Friday at home against Atlantic Shores. Give yourself the afternoon off and watch the high-flying boys followed by the undefeated girls.

Heartbreaker: Epic Season Ends at the Buzzer

In game that symbolized the heart and talent of the team, the Oaks boys basketball team roared back from 11 points down in the second half to lead in the final two minutes only to fall to a three-point bomb with 0.5 seconds left on the clock.

DSC_6000Millwood’s Charles Williams launched a shot from deep on the right side that rattled back and forth inside the rim and then dropped, stunning the raucous Treehouse crowd.

The score of the VISAA quarterfinal was 67-66, but the game had enough dramatic moments to last a season.

Marcus Anderson pushed Collegiate into the lead, 65-64 with a putback dunk after a ferocious battle under the boards with 40 seconds left. The Oaks then stopped Millwood, earning possession on a jump ball with 28.9 seconds on the clock and a one-point lead.

However, they could only convert one of four free throws in the final seconds.

Collegiate started ice cold from the field and quickly fell down by double digits, but determined defense opening the third quarter quickly transformed the game into a barn burner. Collegiate tied the scored at 53 with 5:30 left in the final quarter and it was a battle from then to the buzzer.

DSC_5998Mark Madison was a bulldog on the ball. Marcus Anderson did the blue collar work on the boards. Adam Grant drove to the bucket time and again. Kyonze Chavis came back to hit a couple of key shots, including the one that put the Oaks in front in the fourth quarter.

Bash Townes, who battled a bevy of big Millwood bodies in the paint, led the Oaks with 16 points.

Boys Run Past Christian

adamdunkoPlaying a split squad of starters and reserves kept the game close in the first half, but the Oaks ran away in the third quarter and pummeled Norfolk Christian, 76-49, Tuesday night just down Granby Street.

Once again, every Norfolk Collegiate player scored and played significant minutes.

Big Man Bash Townes led the team with 17, followed by Adam Grant with 16. The Oaks put on a dunkin’ display throughout.

Friday’s game against Hampton Roads Academy will be the last home game. The question is what will be the fan dress du jour? On Tuesday, it was the lumberjack look. Stay tuned.

Boys Tame the Gators

DSC_5132

Both teams started the game with torrid outside shooting, but it was Norfolk Collegiate’s inside dominance that sealed a 76-67 win Friday over Greenbrier Christian Academy.

Bash Townes, Marcus Anderson, and Kyonze Chavis were the co-chairmen of the boards, controlling the paint, getting one rebound after another.

The Oaks stormed to a 9-0 lead on three bombs before Greenbrier Christian pushed back to go ahead 28-20. Adam Grant and Mark Madison were hot from the outside for the Oaks, who recovered to lead at the half.

DSC_5140Down the stretch in the second half, the Oaks had one second chance opportunity on the other thanks to their hard work on the boards.
Townes finished with 22 points and a dozen rebounds. Marcus Anderson scored 13 points and pulled down 11 boards. And Grant had another all-around game with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

The Oaks, now 19-4 and ranked third in the region, play at Norfolk Christian on Tuesday, then return for the final home game against Hampton Roads Academy on Friday.

Treehouse Thriller: Boys Gut Out Win

The final frantic seconds of Friday’s 58-56 win over Walsingham Academy may be the ones stuck in fans’ memories, but it was the final minutes of the first half that set the stage.

DSC_4815The Oaks boys basketball team, after a strong start, went cold, falling behind 28-20 to a talented Walsingham team.

That’s when the Oaks, before a raucous crowd that included the young nuts of the Lower School Treehouse, clamped down on defense, getting key stops. When Marcus Anderson set a pick freeing Adam Grant for a three- point bomb just before the buzzer, Norfolk Collegiate led 30-28.

The Oaks stretched the lead in the second half before Walshingham rebounded. Down by five with the game slipping away, the home team again played tough defense and hit key shots.

Four Oaks again scored in double figures led by Big Man Bash Townes with 16 and Grant with 15.

Grant, a junior, scored his 1000th point in the game, joining fellow junior Bash Townes in the exclusive club.

Strong First Half Carries Boys

adamDeadly outside shooting and a breakneck pace carried the boys basketball team to a 48-35 halftime lead Tuesday night en route to a 75-66 win over TCIS rival Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School.

Junior Adam Grant had a big game for the Oaks, hitting four of five bombs, and scoring a team-high 20 points while harassing the Crusaders’ guards.

Mark Madison had an assertive performance with 13 points and seven assists.

Big Man Bash Townes wheeled inside for 19 points and Kyonze Chavis continued his inspired play with 18 points.
The game turned physical in the second half with bodies flying all over the court, but the Oaks withstood a Bishop Sullivan run and beat the home team at its own game — the fastbreak.

bash2The Oaks were without senior James Glover, who has an injured wrist.

Oaks Fall Short Against Top Team

DSC_4529DSC_4475They fought literally to the final buzzer, but the boys basketball team couldn’t top Cape Henry Collegiate, top-ranked in the area and number five in the nation, losing 80-65 Friday night.

In the first-ever matchup between two private schools ranked one and two in the area, the Dolphins with two players headed to Division I college basketball and a host of other recruits, had too much firepower.

Cape Henry jumped out to a 13-3 lead, but Norfolk Collegiate came back, narrowing the margin to 23-20 with six minutes left in the first half. Kyonze Chavis, who hit some bombs and also scored on a rim-shaking dunk, led the Oaks.

In the second half, Cape Henry stretched the lead. Collegiate threatened, getting only as close as 38-33 early in the half. But they battled right up until Adam Grant’s dunk at the buzzer.

Chavis led Norfolk Collegiate with a game-high 23 points. Grant, who had a strong first half, added 15, and Mark Madison, always tough from behind the three-point line, had 13. Bash Townes, who leads Collegiate averaging nearly 21 points per game, scored 11.

Norfolk Collegiate travels to Bishop Sullivan for a key TCIS game Tuesday night.
