Oaks Win Tight Tourney Game
Junior Adam Grant earned tournament MVP honors and the Oaks made a last-second steal to seal a 69-65 win over CD Hylton Saturday in the Virginia Preps Classic at Green Run High School.
Grant played an all-around game with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Fellow junior Bash Townes led the team with 19 points.
Two unsung blue-collar players, seniors Marcus Anderson and James Glover, made a key play with 20 seconds left, stealing the ball to ensure Norfolk Collegiate’s 12th win of the season.
The Oaks are ranked third in Division II and 12th overall in the state by the MaxPreps web site. Their next game is Saturday in the Martin Luther King Classic in Washington, D.C.

Boys Win Tournament
Responding to a couple of Kellam High surges with strong runs of their own, the Oaks won the Bishop Sullivan Classic Tuesday night, 68-62. handling pressure down the stretch in a matchup of highly-ranked teams.
Collegiate started with a bang as Mark Madison hit a three and was fouled, making the free throw to give the Oaks a 4-0 lead. They stretched it out during the first quarter, but Kellam came back in the second to take a five-point lead late in the half.
That’s when Collegiate got a key stop, a three, and then with seconds to go Marcus Anderson went the length of the floor for a rim-rocking dunk with just a tick on the clock to knot the game at 37.
Collegiate once again went on a run in the third quarter but the pesky Knights kept hitting threes and scoring on fast breaks. Kellam clawed to a 55-54 lead with just under five minutes to play before Collegiate took control.
In the final four minutes Norfolk Collegiate outscored Kellam 14-7, ending any suspense.
Bash Townes, who started slow, led the Oaks with 21 while Madison and Adam Grant scored 13 apiece. Kyonze Chavis had a big game on the boards and hit for 11.

Big Hoops Matchup Tonight
The Oaks, ranked fifth in the region, take on Kellam High School, ranked sixth, tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the second game of the Bishop Sullivan Classic at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School.
Collegiate earned its way into the game with a tough win over Atlantic Shores, 57-55, Monday afternoon thanks to a three-point shot by Kyonze Chavis with 24 seconds in the game.
Adam Grant led the Oaks with 15 points while Marcus Anderson ripped down 10 boards. Chavis popped for 13.
Put Saturday at the Treehouse on your calendar as must-see hoops action against the ‘dogs of Norfolk Academy. The fun starts with the JV boys game at 4, followed by girls varsity at 5:30, and the boys at 7 p.m. Get there early.

Boys Win Thriller in OT
Junior Adam Grant took control of the game, scoring eight of his 23 points in overtime, as the Oaks downed Norcom, 68-66, on foreign territory Saturday night.
Fellow junior Bash Townes scored 20 and pulled down 10 boards for the Oaks, who led by 10 at the half.
Marcus Anderson was a beast on the boards for Collegiate, ripping 11 rebounds and blocking four shots.

Boys Cruise with Balanced Effort
Playing one of their better games of the young season, the boys basketball team cruised past Amelia Academy, 77-55, Friday at home.
Adam Grant and Bash Townes each had 20 points and eight rebounds. Mark Madison popped for 11 points and seven assists while Kyonze Chavis scored 13.

Boys Lose to State Champs at The Buzzer
John Marshall’s senior guard Jay Broaddus hit a jumper with one second on the clock as the undefeated Justices, the reigning 3A state champions, came from behind to beat Norfolk Collegiate, 62-60, Tuesday night.
The Oaks led, 43-38, on the road with 7:25 to play, but the Richmond school roared back to lead 50-49 with 3:05 on the clock. The Oaks countered as Adam Grant, who had a big game, hit from downtown and Bash Townes scored on a put back to even the game at 60 with 28 seconds remaining.
Mark Madison scored 11 in the third quarter to help the Oaks to a 39-33 lead, but they could not hold it. Grant finished with 21 points while Townes had 17.
Boys Hold On For Win
The Oaks took a 33-23 halftime lead and then hung on to defeat Northeastern High School of North Carolina, 51-47, before a packed Treehouse Friday afternoon.
Big Bash Townes, who was presented a commemorative ball for scoring 1,000 points in his Collegiate career before the game, had another strong effort with 23 points and 8 rebounds.
Adam Grant, whose thunderous dunk ended the first half, poured in 12 with 8 rebounds while Keyonze Chavis added eight points and six boards.
The team plays Trinity Episcopal at 5 p.m. today in the Treehouse.

Boys Take Two at Tourney
The boys basketball team won two of three at the Sleepy Thompson Tournament in Alexandria over a long weekend.
The Oaks lost to eventual runner-up Millwood from Midlothian, 57-51, Thursday, faltering at the foul line.
But they came back with impressive wins Friday and Saturday.
Collegiate trailed 40-36 at the half Saturday against Boys Latin School from Baltimore, but made key adjustments to cruise to a 78-57 win. Senior sharp-shooter Mark Madison poured in 26 to lead the Oaks while junior Bash Townes wheeled inside for 20 and wingman Keyonze Chavis added 13.
On Friday, Townes led the oaks past Cesar Chavez School of Washington, D.C. scoring 27 points in a 74-60 win. Chavis popped for 15 and Adam Grant added 13 for the Oaks.
The Oaks, ranked sixth in the region by the local paper, play Northeastern at 1 p.m. Friday at home and Trinity Episcopal at 5 p.m. Saturday at home.

Opener a Blowout for Oaks
Nearly everyone scored as the Oaks, riding a 26-4 third-quarter run, put the game away early on the way to an 84-52 crushing of visiting Steward School.
Junior Big Man Bash Townes led Norfolk Collegiate with 24 points, most of them inside. Keyonze Chavis popped for 17 and point guard Adam Grant scored 16 driving to the basket and hitting from downtown.
Collegiate overcame a slow first quarter to stretch the lead to 38 in the third quarter before everyone got in the game.

Grant, Townes Named to All-State Team
Sophomore guard Adam Grant was named to the VISAA Division II first team All-State squad, capping a season that saw the Oaks advance to the state quarterfinals (and defeat public school state champs Norcom in the regular season).
Joining Grant on the team was fellow soph, Bash Townes, who was named to the second team.
