Two Oaks Earn National Slots at State Tourney

Jaden Bullock lost in the finals. Jacob Roth finished fourth and Tim Spooner took eighth as the Oaks finished 18th out of 27 teams in the VISAA state wrestling tournament.

All five members of the depleted team exceeded their seedings.

Bullock and Roth earned trips to the National Prep Wrestling Championship Tournament at Lehigh University, a collegiate wrestling powerhouse, in Bethlehem PA.

At 160 pounds, second-seeded sophomore Jaden Bullock had a bye but followed up with a fall over Woodberry’s Cochran in 47 seconds. Jaden then pinned CHC’s Chay by pin in 2:24 in the quarter finals. Bullock then crushed third-seeded John Flood of St. Chris in the semifinals in 47 seconds. Jaden’s quest for a state title will have to wait until next year. He dropped a close and exciting finals match to Benedictine’s Ageros, 3-1. Bullock, who is currently ranked seventh by the National Preps’ will seek a place on the All-American podium next week.

At 132 pounds, Jacob Roth also had a first-round bye and then hit the mat in the second round with a pin in 1:50 over Fishburn’s Bowles. In the quarter finals Jacob lit up rival Landon Kissell of Peninsula Catholic with a blistering 15-0 tech-fall in 2:35. Roth then took on Virginia’s top-ranked and two-time state champ Connor Alexander of St. Chris in the semifinals, falling by a 9-0 score. In the consolation semifinal, Jacob pinned Campbell of Collegiate in 4:00 to qualify for the nationals. His day ended with a solid effort in a tough loss in overtime 4-2 to Cole of Paul VI.

At 106 pounds, freshman Max Edwards returned to the lineup for the state tournament. He opened with a bye and then dropped a tech-fall to his TCIS rival and state third placer Dustin Smith of Pen. Catholic. Max then picked up his first state victory with a wild 15-10 win over Bishop Sullivan’s Melendez. However, his first state tournament ended with a tight loss to Hargrave’s Medlin 6-2. Max had an excellent first-year campaign with a winning record.

At 220 pounds, eighth-grader Topher Francis enjoyed an excellent first state tournament experience. He dropped his first match by pin to sixth-seeded senior O’Connell from PJPTG. He moved into the consolations and advanced a round after another wrestler withdrew. Topher lost his next match by pin to Webb of Ireton, but he finished in the top twelve of the state and learned valuable experience.

It was a phenomenal move by the Oak sophomore to win the gold. Bullock had posted a pin and a 15-0 technical fall earlier in the day.

Oaks Grapplers Fall in TCIS Opener

On the team front, it’s been a tough season so far for the depleted Oaks wrestlers because they start most matches with as many as seven forfeits.

But there have been individual stars, as there were in the loss to Norfolk Academy in the TCIS opener.

Sophomore Jaden Bullock is ranked number one in the area at 160 pounds and is in the top 10 nationally in one prep ranking.

For more pictures and video, go to Oaks Wrestling.

Trey Castodio down early for the lead but the experienced NA wrestler rallied for the win 10-4. Max is gaining on him however, he lost by pin last month to Custodio.

At 113 pounds, Dylan Pausch continued his assault on TCIS opponents with a first period using a cross-face cradle to pin NA’s Riley Doyle in 1:06.

Ashton Hall dropped a 9-2 decision to Mac McMann 9-2. The match was very competitive with Ashton down 5-2 late in the third period as he was working hard to turn McMann he was reversed to his back. An excellent effort by the first year freshman.

At 132, Jacob Roth returned to the line-up following a month absence due to injury. The state finalist set a blistering pace leading 12-0 with a first period pin. Jacob is now 9-0 on the year.

Senior Tim Spooner bumped up to 138 for the night and was in a tight scramble with NA’s Justin Zahn and was headlocked and pinned. If there is a rematch down the road the coaching staff believes there will be a much different result.

Sophomore 145 lb. Monroe Forehand dominated Wyatt Fleming with a headlock of his own for a pin in 1:07! A nice start to the new year for Monroe.

Fellow sophomore Jaden Bullock did not make weight but he did wrestle an exhibition match verses his Peninsula Catholic Tournament 170 lb. finals opponent Seth Lucas who he decisioned 6-2. This time the Oaks state medalist scored a 17-2 technical fall over Lucas to end the match after 2 periods. The snow storm school closing may have given Bullock some additional weight but it sure didn’t hurt his wrestling technique which was outstanding! Jaden should return to 160 Saturday.

Eighth grader Topher Francis put up a good fight at 220 against NA’s Carlton Ford losing by

Earlier, the Oaks picked up a win at the Franklin Duals defeating Washington & Lee 36-24 and lost a dual on a coin flip after being tied with Lakeland High School 36-36. Overall the Oaks went 1-4 on the day dual wise but it had it’s share of exciting matches with the wrestlers going 25-10 in bouts.

They started the day off with the win over W&L, with Max Edwards, Ashton Hall, Tim Spooner, and Monroe Forehand picking up wins by forfeit. Dylan Pausch dropped a hard fought match by fall in 2:41 before Jacob Roth won by fall in 1:13 followed by Jaden Bullocks win by pin in 1:12.

Northumberland High School slipped past the Oaks 36-28 while Edwards, Roth, and Forehand won by forfeit. Both Pausch and Hall

had tough losses by fall, while Spooner won by fall in :33 and Bullock defeated “A” Region Champion Davis 16-3.

Mathews High School also narrowly defeated the Oaks by a 36-30 score. The dual was highlighted by pins from Edwards at 106, Roth at 132, and Bullock at 170.

The Oaks then took on powerful Deep Creek High Sschool, the Franklin Duals Tournament Champions losing by a 46-15 score. Roth won by fall in 3:01 as did Forehand in 1:11. Jaden Bullock was battle tested after falling behind early 7-3 before rallying in the third period with a thrilling come from behind win over Deep Creeks Tim Gardner 8-7.

In the place round, the Oaks and Lakeland, two teams with too many holes in their line-ups faced off with only two bouts being contested. Jacob Roth pinned D. Montreane in 1:11 followed by Lakeland’s L. Jacobs pinning the Oaks Monroe Forehand after Forehand was rolled through with a pinning combination for the upset. Then the coin toss, which Lakeland won.

“On the surface you could say we are not happy with our current 2-17 record,” Coach Mike Newbern said. “But our wrestlers have continued to win more matches contested than our opponents in every dual or tournament. It’s tough going into matches forfeiting seven weight classes which equals 42 points, but our boys continue to fight hard every match. I’m very proud of them and  our middle school numbers are up, and our future is bright”

Thanks for the summaries to Coach Newbern, who apparently retains the skills he honed as a sportswriter at Lehigh University’s Brown and White newspaper.
