Girls Dominate Christian; Win Fifth Straight

DSC_0005Freshman Sarah Smith scored a hat trick in the first half and the Collegiate girls soccer team, ranked fourth in the state, dominated Norfolk Christian, 5-1, Tuesday at home.

The Oaks are the defending Division II state champions, but were moved up to Division I, competing against schools with much bigger enrollments, by a change in VISAA rules. Schools with 125 girls in the top four grades now compete in Division 1 and — you guessed it — Collegiate has exactly 125 girls. They play third-ranked Trinity Episcopal of Richmond away on Friday.

In the Christian win, Smith scored a fourth goal in the second half and fellow frosh Ashby Larkin, who tirelessly ran the midfield, scored once.

The Oaks had a dozen solid scoring opportunities, hitting the crossbar twice. Senior Natalie Batzel and junior Ann Burns Morrison shut down Christian’s all-state forward, Kayla Morrison.  Senior Jessie Cavolt was stalwart in goal, handling everything that got past the defense.

DSC_9929Since the Oaks fell behind 2-0 in the first 15 minutes of the contest against Walsingham five games ago, the team has scored 27 goals and surrendered just two. The girls scored seven unanswered goals against Walsingham, then four more against the Collegiate School of Richmond the next day.

They defeated Peninsula Catholic 6-1 and Greenbrier Christian, 5-0, in games where keeper Jessie Cavolt played the field much of the time and scored a goal against Greenbrier. Madison White, Alexis McGurn, Larkin and Smith also scored against Greenbrier.

Soccer Team Starts Slow, Falls to State #1

DSC_8200St. Catherine’s scored within the first minute and then twice more within ten minutes and the Oaks girls soccer team couldn’t recover despite numerous chances, losing,  3-1, on Wednesday.

Cameron Brown scored midway through the first half and that ignited the Oaks. They controlled play in the latter portion of the half, then outplayed the visitors, ranked number one in the state, throughout the second half.

The Oaks had at least half a dozen solid scoring chances, but could not find the back of the net. Sarah Smith shot just wide, then hit the post on another scoring chance Ashby Larkin missed in close. Brown was on the doorstep, but the ball popped over the goal. Hannah Beale was stone-walled by the St. Catherine keeper. Ann Burns Morrison’s laser sailed inches over the crossbar. It was that kind of day for the Oaks.

The girls play at Cape Henry today at 4:30 in a key TCIS game.
