Runners Finish Strong at State Meet
The Collegiate boys and girls capped off banner seasons with identical 15th place finishes at the VISAA Division II Cross Country Championships on Friday at Fork Union.
Chandler Branton led the Oaks, taking 29th in a time of 18:35, while Miles Edmond (19:00) was a few spots back in 35th.
“Chandler did great,” said Head Coach Rob Tupper. “Miles, too. Everyone ran hard, it was a super effort.”
Harrison Fuller, Matt Unrein, Chas LeHew, Frankie White, Feifan Qiao and Parker Gross rounded out the effort for the boys, who return their entire lineup next fall and should contend for a top-five statewide finish.
The trio of Malia Mantz (22:40), Claudia King (22:43) and Maddie Foster (23:31), who finished 43rd, 45th an 65th respectively in the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race, led the way once again for the girls.
Emma Stephenson, Ashley Obermeyer and Cecilia Innis all proved instrumental in the team’s 15th-place finish, all three running personal bests over the tough, sometimes muddy course.
“They tore it up,” said Tupper, who was assisted all season by Coach Loli Marshall and Coach Richard White “Malia, Maddie, Claudia, Cecilia ran like they’ve been doing it all year. And Emma and Ashley stepped up and did a great job.
“I’m very proud of the whole team. They worked so hard, did everything we asked of them.
“Our motto’s been ‘Success isn’t given, it’s earned,’ well, this bunch earned it.’ “
