The Collegiate cross country team looked sharp on Thursday at the Cape Henry Invitational. Claudia King tooksecond in the girls main event, while the boys finished runner-up in the team race.
The Oaks – nursing some injuries — ran somewhat shorthanded in their final tune-up before TCIS but still made their mark over the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course at Virginia Beach’s Mount Trashmore.
Claudia (23:58), for her part, led in the early going, but ultimately had to settle for second, an effort that propelled the girls to a runner-up finish in the girls standings.
Miles Edmond (18:31) wound up third in the boys varsity race, while teammate Harrison Fuller medaled, as well, finishing sixth in a personal record, 19:23. Matt Unrein (21:26) followed in 14th place, while Feifan Qiao – making his season debut – finished 18th in a time of 22:10. Thomas Batzel (22:17) and Chas LeHew (22:20) followed in 20th and 21st respectively, while Parker Gross (24:04) ended up 28th.
On the junior varsity front, Gina Leanzo (24:53) finished second in the girls’ race, while Truman Skaggs (23:42) grabbed sixth and Will Frankenberry, 21st, for the boys.
The team will compete next Friday in the TCIS Championship at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake and then one final time a week later at the VISAA State Cross Country Championships at Fork Union.
