Another Strong Outing by Cross Country Team
The Collegiate cross country team, capitalizing on a fast course and favorable conditions, posted another strong performance on Saturday at the Norfolk Academy Invitational.
“I expected some good times, but this exceeded my expectations,” said head coach Rob Tupper. “There was some fantastic times for both the boys and girls. The hard work is really paying dividends.”
Malia Mantz (21:27) and Chandler Branton (18:02) once again led the way for the Oaks, both finishing 22nd in their respective varsity races, running personal bests in a meet that attracted better than 20 schools and more than 300 runners.
Maddie Foster (21:45) took 25th and teammate Claudia King (22:06) was two spots back in 27th for the girls’ varsity, while Gina Leanzo finished 19th and Veronica Gross wound up 36th in her first race of the season in junior varsity competition.
On the boys side, where the Oaks finished seventh in the team standings, Miles Edmond (18:25) took 28th, and Frankie White (18:48) 40th, both setting personal records, as did Harrison Fuller (19:27), Matt Unrein (20:29) and Parker Gross (22:50) in the varsity race and Ryan Hodges (23:45) for the JV.
Coach Tupper is certain that the best lies ahead.
“We haven’t peaked yet,” he said. “I like where we’re at, but we’re only going to get better. Check back in a few more weeks and I think we’ll see something really special.”
