Oaks Fall in Epic Semifinal

DSC_1557They battled for 100 minutes, but the Oaks girls soccer team came up short Friday in Richmond against St. Catherine’s, the top-ranked squad in Virginia, 3-2, in overtime.

Ferocious striker Sarah Smith scored twice for Collegiate and Jessie Cavolt was big in goal. But St. Catherine’s scored on a penalty kick in the first ten-minute overtime period, then held off a furious charge by the Oaks in the final minutes.

Details, pictures, and video to follow, but here is video of the final two minutes as the Oaks got one corner kick after another and were on the doorstep each time.

In the waning seconds, Sarah Smith’s corner shot headed for the top shelf was punched away. Seconds later, Sofia Jonson’s solid volley was batted aside by the St. Catherine’s keeper who recovered to grab the ball as she collided with Ann Burns Morrison charging for a header. Unlabeled video is up on the flickr site, Oaks Soccer.
