Runners Peaking for State Meet
The Collegiate girls and boys cross country teams are peaking at just the right time, setting a number of personal records in Thursday’s TCIS Championships in Newport News, the final meet before this week’s VISAA State Championships.
Eight of the top-ten finishers for the two varsity squads set new personal marks running the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course.
Natalie Batzel earned All-Conference honors for a third-straight year, posting a season-best 20:56 as she finished 14th overall in a deep field.
Claudia King (21:42) finished 22nd , Cameron Brown (22:16) was 28th, Sarah Smallets (22:55) took 39th and Maddie Foster (23:07) wound up 42nd, all four runners setting personal records along the way as the girls finished sixth in the team race.
Chandler Branton, Thomas Batzel and Harrison Fuller went sub-20 in the boys varsity race, all three runners setting PRs in the process.
Chandler ran a 19:03 to finish 29th, while Thomas (19:47) took 39th and Harrison (19:50) was 41st. Matt Unrein (23:18) posted his best time ever in finishing 63rd, while teammate Parker Gross ended up one spot back in 64th place.
In the final tallies, the girls finished sixth and the boys seventh.
In JV competition, sixth-grader Gina Leanzo set a personal best of 23:58 as she finished 13th overall in the girls race, while Chas LeHew wound up 27th in the boys race, posting a season-best 21:58.
The Oaks conclude the 2014 season on Friday at the VISAA State Championships in Woodberry Forest.
