Girls Capture Comets in Season Opener

Sarah Smith hit a ball into an open goal after a beautiful series of passes to give the Oaks girls soccer team a 1-0 win over Granby High School Tuesday at ODU’s Powhatan Field.

Smith scored with about 12 minutes left in the game and Collegiate blunted the Comets’ attack the rest of the way on a a cold, rainy, and windy afternoon.

The game went back and forth in the first half, when the Oaks were playing against a strong wind. Demetra Protogyrou hit the crossbar with a shot deep in the half, the team’s best scoring chance.

In the second half, the game opened up and Norfolk Collegiate had several chances. Cameron Brown went in solo on the keeper, but couldn’t score. Another shot hit the post and ricocheted away. Georgia Drinkwalter, Natalie Kanter, Ann Burns Morrison, and Smith took shots that were off target.  Natalie Batzel and Madison Parker were stalwart on defense and Jessie Cavolt had another strong outing in goal.
