Sailors Second in the State

DSC_1227Norfolk Collegiate finished second in the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association championships led by skippers Darden Purrington, Dreugh Phillips, and Victor Layne.

Christchurch School took the state title, well ahead of the Oaks, who nudged out Poquoson and Norfolk Academy in the regatta held Saturday. For pictures from the regatta, go to Oaks Sailing 2013.

The JV team also finished second, behind Norfolk Academy.

The varsity regatta was a fleet race with 25 boats competing in two fleets (A and B). Norfolk Collegiate had three boats. The JV regatta was a fleet race with 11 boats competing. Norfolk Collegiate JV sailed one boat.

The overall finish for the varsity for DSC_1160combined A+B fleets was
1-Christchurch (18 points)

2-Norfolk Collegiate (52 points)
3-Poquoson (58 points)
4-Norfolk Academy (60 points)
5-Christchurch 2 (78 points)
6-Norfolk Collegiate 2 (82 points)
9-Norfolk Collegiate 3 (98 points)

The day started with weak winds and cool temperatures. The winds increased from the southwest through the day becoming strong by mid-afternoon. Two races were abandoned because of interfering barge traffic.

All of the Collegiate finishes were in the top half of the fleet and most of the finishes were in the top 20% of the fleet. Combined finishes have Norfolk Collegiate second overall for both varsity and
JV.

B Fleet finishes for Norfolk Collegiate were 3-NCS (22 points), 10-NCS2
(51 points) and 12-NCS3 (58 points).
