Runners A Strong Second in Saturday Meet
The Collegiate boys cross country team finished second in the team race on Saturday hosted by Norfolk Academy, taking runner-up honors for the second consecutive week.
In the day’s other varsity race, Natalie Batzel kept up her string of top performances, finishing third in a season-best 21:11 over the five-kilometer, 3.1-mile course.
“Overall I thought we ran well, “ Coach Rob Tupper said. “A lot of them ran PRs (personal records) and put up some good times.”
The varsity boys wound up in a tie for second place with Oscar Smith High School, both finishing behind host Norfolk Academy.
Steve Turack paced the Oaks for the second straight meet, running an 18:16, good for ninth place, just two seconds off his career best.
Chad Hengesbach followed one spot behind in tenth place at 18:32. David Baldwin (19:14), Rex Zhang (19:50) and Chandler Branton (20:19) rounded out the top five for Collegiate, all three running their best times ever.
Frankie White, Jakob Gray, and Harrison Fuller filled out the varsity complement in a meet that saw all of Collegiate’s top eight runners running together for the first time this season.
But even that came with an asterisk.
“So many of them are battling illnesses,” Coach Tupper said. “With that and the rain the past week, we haven’t been able to train quite like we want to.”
The next race is at Mount Trashmore on Thursday.
“Hopefully, we can over the illnesses and get back on our training schedule. If we can do that, we can get where we need to be.”
