Hengesbach, Batzel Lead Runners

Natalie_Batzel_CCIn the second cross country meet of the season, earlier in the school year, Natalie Batzel and Chad Hengesbach led the way for Collegiate at the Walsingham Invitational, held in Williamsburg.

Natalie finished second in the Girls’ varsity competition, while Chad took seventh in the boys’ varsity race. On the JV side, Frankie White followed up his first-place finish in the team’s opening meet by taking third overall in the 72-man field.

Natalie, who took sixth in the opening meet of the season, ran a 22:21 to finish in the runner-up slot.

Chad, for his part, matched his seventh-place finish of a year ago in the meet, although he cut more than 30 seconds off his 2012 time to finish in 18:47.

Connor Hopkins, running his first meet of the season, posted a 20:47 to take 24th and teammate Rex Zhang, continuing to show improvement, finished 30th in 22:13 for the shorthanded Oaks, who were competing without two of their top runners.

In the JV race, Frankie ran a personal-record 20:40 to lead the way for the Collegiate, which placed four runners in the top 25. Chandler Branton (22:18) finished 15th while Harrison Fuller (23:35) took 20th and Chas LeHew wound up spot one behind him in 21st in a personal-best 23:54.

(Why so many cross country posts now? The reports were inadvertently sent to the wrong person in recent weeks).
