Fantastic Finishes: One Win, One Loss
The drama was on the playing fields Tuesday afternoon, not on the stage of the nearby Meredith Center, as the boys soccer team wrested a victory from Atlantic Shores on Ryan Russell’s shot with two minutes remaining, while the girls field hockey team lost on a goal with 12 seconds left in sudden death.
Russell, a senior, scored when sophomore Nick Sarris’ cross bounced off the crossbar and fell at his feet in front of the Atlantic Shores keeper. It was the second goal of the game for Russell, who scored off an assist from senior Corey Nichols in the first half, bringing the Oaks even after an early Atlantic Shores goal.
“It certainly wasn’t our best game, however, it was probably our gutsiest, and I think the better team walked away with the victory,” Coach Kai Evans said.
Trey Ritter in goal and Corey Nichols and junior Chris Bianchi in the midfield had strong games for Collegiate.
The team plays at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School on Thursday.
