Hitters Roll Over Christian

DSC_5140Nick Curtis’s two out, full count line triple to right-center cleared the bases and broke open the game as the Oaks cruised to a 14-2 win over Norfolk Christian Saturday night.

Seniors Will Daniel and Vince Thomas combined on a one-hitter in the five-inning game, cut short by the 10-run rule.

Norfolk Collegiate led 5-1 entering the fourth inning when a six-run rally put the game out of reach. Joe Morrison opened with a single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was out at third on Connor Hopkins’ bunt. Hopkins scooted to second before Mark Howlett singled to center. Cabell Thomas was hit by a pitch before Vince Thomas walked to load the bases. Will Daniel’s towering sacrifice fly scored a run.

Ian Turner singled to center to score a run before Paul Mahoney walked to load the bases for Curtis, who fouled off a pair of two-strike fastballs before drilling a triple.

The Oaks scored four in the first when Howlett walked, Cabell Thomas was hit by a pitch, and Daniel singled. Turner reached on an error before Curtis flared a hit to right. DSC_5259

In the fifth inning, Collegiate added three more runs. Hopkins singled to left, Howlett walked and Cabell Thomas singled up the middle to score a run. Vince Thomas followed with a single before Daniel launched another sacrifice fly. The third run scored on Mahoney’s grounder to first.

Daniel pitched four innings, then Vince Thomas came in to strike out the side and end the game in the fifth inning.

In the first game of the Saturday doubleheader, the Oaks fell to North Carolina’s First Flight High School, 8-1.
