Strong Second Half Carries Boys in Tourney Opener

DSC_4880The Oaks overcame a slow first half to seize control of the game in the final minutes and defeat Hampton Roads Academy, 66-52, Tuesday in the Treehouse to advance to the TCIS Tournament semifinal.

The big three freshmen of Bash Townes, Adam Grant, and Keyonze Chavis stepped up for the Oaks. Townes poured in 22 points, scoring at will underneath, and grabbed seven rebounds.

Grant and Chavis had a dozen points each and Brandon Self, who again was The Rejector in the lane, added ten points.

Collegiate took an early lead, but the Navigators pressed hard on defense and slowed the pace on offense to take a lead in the second quarter. But the Oaks made a run to edge in front, 32-31 at the half.

The fourth quarter was a different story as the quickness, speed, and inside power of the Oaks spurred a run that put them into an expanding lead going down the stretch.

The Oaks, ranked fourth in the Division 2 VISA Top 10, play nemesis Walsingham Academy Friday night at 7 p.m. at Hampton Roads Academy.

Get through the tunnel eary for the big game, a rematch of last Saturday’s Collegiate triumph.
