Sailors Nab Another State Title, Head to Atlantic Coast Championships

The Collegiate Sail Team is on another banner campaign, capturing the state team race championships, the state fleet race championship and the Mid-Atlantic Fleet Race championship. Skippers Ian Stokes and Anderson Granger and crew Layne Kennedy are three of the top sailors in the country. They’re supported by an up-and-coming group of eighth and ninth graders including Victor Layne, Darden Purrington, Nick Baker, Joe Morrison, Evan Johnston, and Mike Klink.

Stokes and Granger were named All-State skippers and Kennedy an All-State crew member. Stokes was named the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association Sailor of the Year.

“The rookies started rough, but are developing rapidly, showing flashes of brilliance in local races and pushing each other hard in practices,” says Randy Stokes, the veteran coach. “They will need to step up for the Oaks to achieve their bold goal of winning the 2011 MidAtlantic Team Race Championship, but they are showing the dedication and the talent to make it happen.  Winning the Team Race Championship with three rookies on the water would be an unbelievable upset victory.”
The team sails in the team race championship the weekend of Nov. 5 and the fleet race championship the weekend of Nov. 12.
